UPS Systems has supplied one of its new hydrogen fuel cells, the Mobixane, to documentary makers Renegade Pictures. The fuel cell gives Renegade Pictures a virtually silent portable power supply for its 3D camera equipment, which it is using to film a new Sky TV series about Woburn Safari Park.

UPS Systems has supplied the Met Office with a Commpac 500 hydrogen fuel cell. The Met Office is trialling the unit at its weather monitoring station in Camborne, Cornwall to evaluate the fuel cell’s suitability for providing independent power to remote locations.

UPS Systems has installed two generators at RAF Valley, the RAF’s fast jet pilot training facility on Anglesey in north Wales. UPS Systems has installed a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) at the Environment Agency’s Woolston Weir fishery. The fuel cell will aid the Environment Agency’s conservation work by providing power to telemetry and CCTV equipment at an ‘eel pass’ to monitor the endangered species’ journey upstream to fresh water.

Experienced yachtsmen Chris Tibbs and Don Wright have been declared the winners of this years’ Azores and Back (AZAB) race. Their boat, Taika, crossed the finishing line on 28 June with a fuel cell on board providing auxiliary power.
AZAB is held every four years, and is hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. This year 60 competitors took part in the 2,500 mile race from Falmouth to Azores and back again.

This weekend saw the start of the AZAB, a 2,500 mile single and double handed race from Falmouth to the Azores, and back.
This year 60 entries set off including Chris Tibbs’ J105, Taika.
On-board is an EFOY 2200 provided by UPS Systems’ daughter company Fuel Cell Systems, to power her navigation and communication systems. The fleet so far have experienced winds of 30kts which has helped put Taika in 3rd place overall.
