Standby Power

Remote Monitoring

Most shutdown software now offers the ability to send a pager message on predetermined power conditions (e.g. mains failure). This can be invaluable where the Network Manager is frequently away from his desk or where automatic rebooting has been inhibited because manual intervention is required before restarting the system.

Some systems are also able to send email in the event of a power exception condition. This can be used in conjunction with MAPI-enabled applications to initiate any computer-based process that is needed.

More sophisticated (typically larger) systems will perform a regular self-test and can transmit notification of out-of specification operational data via a modem to a central monitoring site, usually at the manufacturer's engineering offices. Using this facility, the manufacturer can have an engineer on site even before the user realises there is a potential problem.

Almost all UPS can be supplied with environmental monitoring options which as well as checking humidity and temperature will monitor a number of contact closure devices, such as a cabinet door trip switch, or a computer room door switch. As with the events described above, notification can be transmitted via pager or email. Like all monitored UPS activity, these events will be written to a log file with dates and times for subsequent analysis.

Equipment is also available to switch remote devices on or off, either switching different output sockets on the UPS, or by using separate equipment situated (usually) on the output side of the UPS. Where it's necessary to reboot a remote system from time to time, this can save thousands in travel costs. This often uses TCP/IP as the communications protocol, allowing control of remote devices anywhere there is an Internet connection, should you wish it.

REMO™ Remote Monitoring Services

Available on most brands of UPS and on all Generators, the UPS Systems remote monitoring service (REMO®) provides constant monitoring while the unit is in operation by sending a text or email to multiple addresses, the instance a problem occurs.  For further information, view the REMO® page or call us on 01488 680 500.
