Could lithium ion batteries replace lead acid in UPS systems?

Lithium ion batteriesThis article from Riello highlights how Lithium ion batteries are gaining in popularity for UPS systems. In the USA, demand is expected to grow by 26% per year until 2016.

Previously, lead acid batteries were the preferred option, as lithium is highly flammable and there were safety concerns about their use in consumer electronics. And Lithium ion batteries are also up to eight times more expensive.

However, Lithium ion batteries have better green credentials, are up to 50% smaller than equivalent lead acid batteries, and are less temperature sensitive.

It’s an exciting development for the UPS market. Riello says it can see the potential of these batteries and will be watching with interest how the market develops.
