Announced on December 4 2013, the tender comprises two sets of 4 x 100kVA Riello MST Multi Sentry UPS. UPS Systems will install the equipment during the first quarter of 2014. The standby power supplies will ensure that vital computing equipment at the Met Office’s head office in Exeter remains operational in the event of a power outage.
The contract is the first to be awarded under a three-year framework agreement with the UK’s Met Office. Under the agreement, UPS Systems qualifies as one of six companies eligible to submit tenders for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems designed to provide standby power for vital IT and communication systems. The UPS equipment will range from 1kVA to 800kVA and above.
Commenting on the framework agreement, Tom Sperrey, managing director for UPS Systems said: “This was a hotly contested supply agreement that we’re very pleased to have won. The key factors were our ability to provide equipment from a very wide range of products combined with a detailed knowledge of their relative features and strengths. The Met Office has been a valued customer of ours for some years and we’re delighted with its continued confidence in us.”
Darren Ball, contracts and procurement manager with the Met Office highlights the importance of having a reliable standby power supply. He commented: “The vital work carried out by the UK’s Met Office relies on a secure and uninterrupted power supply to maintain its reputation as one of the world’s most accurate forecasters.”
