Uninterruptible Power Supply

Ocado took full occupation of their new Trident Place Head offices in March 2007, an estate they took over from a major telecoms provider. Within the new offices, Ocado inherited existing Data Centre space from a legacy operation. This Data Centre was protected by an old UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) system which was highly inefficient.

Ocado is a British online supermarket. In contrast to its main competitors, the company has no chain of stores and does all home deliveries from its warehouses. Ocado has been voted the best online supermarket in the UK by Which? readers every year since 2010.

Its main office is in Hatfield, Hertfordshire which is pivotal in their Business Support, Human Resources, Retail and Supply Chain Business Units.

During site surveys, readings were taken to demonstrate that the Qty 3 x existing 200kVA (160kW) units were operating with an efficiency of less than 50%. Ocado approached UPS Systems plc to replace the existing units with new, high efficiency models to guarantee operational efficiency without downtime to their existing operations.

The existing UPS modules (each with a 1500kg mass!) were installed in a ground floor plant room in a floor well surrounded by an office grade raised access floor.

To fulfil the brief by Ocado, UPS Systems plc replaced the existing Qty 3 x 200kVA (160kW) UPS modules with Qty 3 x 200kVA (200kW) unity UPS modules with an operational efficiency of up to 96.5%.

The facility was put into full wrap around bypass which isolated the units and then the existing Qty 9 x strings of 33 battery blocks were decommissioned & removed (8,910kg in total!) followed by the Qty 3 x large transformer based UPS modules. The Qty 3 x new UPS modules and Qty 6 x new strings of 40 battery blocks (each rated at 110Ah) were then delivered, positioned and connected.

Riello UPS Installation The new units were installed with internal SNMP/MODBUS communications cards and have been connected to the UPS Systems plc cloud based monitoring system RemoNet which is monitored 24/7 by UPS Systems plc.

The removal of the old infrastructure and installation & commissioning of the new UPS modules and associated battery boxes took less than 4 days.

The Ocado Data Centre is now fully protected and comes with the 3 year warranty on the UPS modules, 5 year warranty on the batteries and a 24/7 fully comprehensive maintenance contract.
