  1. What is Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)?

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a way of determining how efficiently a data centre uses energy. PUE measures how much energy is used to power the IT equipment in a data centre in comparison with how much energy it takes to run the facility (i.e cooling, lighting etc.). PUE is determined by dividing the amount of power entering a data center by the power used to run the computer infrastructure within it. A PUE survey will give a data centre a PUE of 1 or above. According to the Uptime Institutes 2014 Data Centre Survey, the average PUE for respondents' largest data centres is 1.7.

Over the last seven years, UPS Systems plc have worked closely with Marine Electrical Installations Ltd (MEI) who offer mechanical and electrical engineering services for a range of marine applications. MEI contacted UPS Systems plc after one of their customers requested the refit of several UPS units. UPS Systems provided impartial technical advice and marine-approved equipment that met the specific requirements of the marine industry. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has ruled that all ships must have Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) by July 2018. The Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requirement for certain vessel types to have an ECDIS came into force in 2012.

Since then, there have been annual deadlines every 1st of July which continues until 2018 when it will become mandatory for all ships to have an ECDIS. In order to comply with IMO regulations, backup to the ECDIS is required. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides backup in the event of power failure to ensure the ECDIS can keep running smoothly. UPS Systems plc has a longstanding reputation for supplying marine approved UPS units and can provide the widest range of options to back up critical onboard instruments and enable you to meet with IMO rules.

The UPS units were installed aboard several large oil tankers to provide a continuous source of back-up power in the event of a power failure. The systems ensured that essential electronic equipment, particularly the ECDIS, remained online and operational at all times. Tony Hutchinson, sales manager for MEI, commented on the value of UPS Systems plc's expertise, he said: "UPS Systems' impartial advice and knowledge is extremely beneficial. The fact that they can supply us with DNV type-approved equipment that comes with purpose-built marine installation kits makes our purchasing decision much easier; we know the products will be up to the job."
